About this article
HDMI® 2.1a specification is the most recent update to the HDMI® specification and supports a range of higher video resolutions and refresh rates, including 8K60 and 4K120, and resolutions up to 10K. Dynamic HDR formats are also supported and bandwidth capacity is increased to 48 Gbps.
The new Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable supports 48Gbps bandwidth. The cable ensures that features dependent on ultra high bandwidth are delivered, including uncompressed 8K video with HDR. It features exceptionally low EMI (electromagnetic interference) that reduces interference with nearby wireless devices. The cable is backward compatible and can be used with the existing installed base of HDMI devices.
8K delivers a super immersive viewing experience with 2x the horizontal and vertical resolution of 4K and 4x the pixels; and combined with a 60Hz refresh rate enables smooth and crisp viewing of content with high-speed action. 4K@120Hz enables ultra-fast-moving UHD images to be crisp and clear; and sports, action movies, high-performance games and virtual reality benefit significantly.
Improved Game Features
Enhanced gaming and media features ensure an additional level of smooth, seamless motion and transitions for games, movies, and video. Many of these features are already available on TVs and game consoles on the market today and will become more common as HDMI 2.1a-compatible devices continue to be released. These features are not only ideal for game consoles, but also for streaming content to compatible TVs.
HDMI Dynamic HDR
HDMI 2.1A supports multiple static and dynamic HDR solutions. HDR enhances video images with an expanded dark-to-light contrast range for deeper blacks and brighter whites, more detail in both dark and light portions of the same image, and more detail across an expanded color space.
Features
.Higher resolutions support a range of high resolutions and faster refresh rates, including 8K60Hz and 4K120Hz for immersive viewing and smooth fast-action detail. Resolutions up to 10K are also supported for commercial, industrial, and specialty AV applications.
.Dynamic HDR support ensures that every moment of a video is displayed at its ideal values for depth, detail, brightness, contrast, and wider color gamuts, scene by scene or even frame by frame.
.Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM) is a new HDR feature that allows some of the HDR mapping to be done by the source device instead of the display device. SBTM is particularly useful in cases where HDR and SDR video or graphics are combined into a single image, such as a picture-in-picture or a program guide with an embedded video window. SBTM also allows PCs and gaming devices to automatically output an optimized HDR signal to maximize use of the display's HDR capabilities without manual configuration of the source device by the user.
.The Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable supports 48G bandwidth for uncompressed HDMI 2.1A functionality. The cable also features very low EMI emissions and is backward compatible with earlier versions of the HDMI specification and can be used with existing HDMI devices.
